WCN 2021 | Nutritional intervention studies to influence the gut microbiome and improve Parkinson’s disease

Brit Mollenhauer, MD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, discusses the role of nutrition in Parkinson’s disease (PD). It has been reported that the addition of resistant starch supplements reduced the amount of mucus-digesting bacteria responsible for leaky gut syndrome in PD. Dr Mollenhauer is now conducting a study exploring whether influencing the gut microbiome could improve symptoms experienced by patients with PD. In addition, other studies are currently examining the potential benefits of fasting on the microbiome. This interview took place during the XXV World Congress of Neurology.
