Stroke medicine has seen a significant development of novel treatment strategies that can significantly improve the outcome of stroke patients. Dileep Yavagal, MD, University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, discusses the most critical developments in the stroke field in recent years, including the implementation of mobile stroke units (MSUs), which are ambulances equipped with a computed tomography (CT) scanner. This approach enables stroke specialists to reach patients earlier and has been shown in trials to benefit patients. In the last couple of years, telehealth has grown and brought the opportunity to offer virtual health services, increasing access to acute stroke care; for instance, patients can be remotely evaluated by a stroke specialist. Notably, the availability of novel thrombolytic agents such as tenecteplase is a significant advance in stroke therapy. Likewise, the field of thrombectomy continues to evolve with improved techniques and improved patient selection. In the coming years, novel developments will continue to arise with the hope of reducing the disability burden caused by stroke globally.
