MDS 2022 | The treatment of OFF episodes in Parkinson’s disease

“Fabrizio Stocchi, MD, PhD, IRCCS San Raffaele Rome, Sapienza University of Rome, Rome, Italy, discusses the various causes of OFF episodes in patients with Parkinson’s disease and management strategies. Usually, patients suffer from wearing-off episodes because levodopa’s effect finishes before the next treatment dose – the classic wearing-off. However, the OFF phenomenon can also be caused by the lack or delayed absorption of levodopa. In these cases, rescue therapy or therapy on-demand can help since they bypass the gastrointestinal tract, such as sublingual apomorphine. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
