ESOC 2022 | Rare causes of stroke in women

Diana Aguiar de Sousa, MD, PhD, Lisbon Central University Hospital Center, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, discusses rare causes of stroke in women. Several less common stroke subtypes are known to occur much more frequently in women, particularly those of fertile age. These include cerebral venous thrombosis, which occurs when a blood clot forms in the brain’s venous sinuses and is estimated to be 3 times more common in women than men, and reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome (RCVS), which has a female/male ratio of approximately 2:1. Other causes are unique to women, including amniotic fluid embolism and eclampsia. Prof. Aguiar de Sousa comments on the importance of spotlighting these rare causes and advocating for more research in this area. This interview took place at the ESOC 2022 congress in Lyon, France.
