ESOC 2022 | Genetics and stroke: risk and recovery

Ana Catarina Fonseca, MD, PhD, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, comments on key data presented during a session at the European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022, focused on updates on genetics and biomarkers in stroke. Several new findings were shared related to stroke risk, including the influence of the gut microbiome, glomerular filtration rate as a newly identified independent predictor of stroke, and the association between intracerebral hemorrhage and genetically predicted on-statin LDL response. Numerous research groups are also beginning to look into the impact of genetics on stroke severity, prognosis, and recovery. While this field is still in its infancy, data was presented at ESOC that showed certain domains to associate with post-stroke motor recovery. This interview took place at European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022 in Lyon, France.
