VJVirtual | Areas of further research to clarify COVID-19 and neurological symptoms

Sabrina Ravaglia • 29 Apr 2020

Sabrina Ravaglia, MD, PhD, IRCCS C. Mondino Foundation, Pavia, Italy, discusses the areas of further investigation to gain a deeper understanding of COVID-19 and neurological manifestations. Data is being collected from hospitals in northern Italy describing cases from February to April. There is currently not a diagnosis for the neurological symptoms that manifest, therefore they need further clarification. However, due to the ongoing pandemic, diagnostic abilities, such as brain imaging, are limited to reduce cross-contamination. The origin of specific neurological symptoms also needs to be distinguished, for example, those related directly to respiratory function. The involvement of the autonomic system also needs to be investigated due to reports of autonomic dysfunction. This interview was recorded during an online conference call with The Video Journal of Neurology (VJNeurology).
