ACTRIMS 2021 | Investigating remyelination with apo-transferrin and triiodothyronine

Jorge Correale, MD, Raúl Carrea Institute for Neurological Research (FLENI), Buenos Aires, Argentina, discusses an investigation into the roles of thyroid hormones and apo-transferrin (aTf) in myelination and remyelination. Studies in primary cell cultures showed that aTf and triiodothyronine (T3) both accelerated maturation, most notably when given in combination, and both agents increased myelin deposition following a cuprizone-induced demyelination protocol. Studies are looking into intranasal administration of these agents in animal models to avoid the need for intracranial injection. This interview took place during the ACTRIMS Forum 2021.
