MDS 2022 | Recognizing iatrogenic movement disorders

Carlo Colosimo, MD, FEAN, Santa Maria University Hospital, Terni, Italy, talks on iatrogenic hyperkinetic movement disorders. It is vital to recognize iatrogenic movement disorders as they are common and frequently lead patients to emergency care services. Regarding iatrogenic hyperkinetic movement disorders induced by pharmacological treatments, neuroleptic drugs commonly used for psychiatric disorders are responsible for a substantial number of cases. Studies have shown that one-third of the patients taking neuroleptics for an extended period develop neurological complications, including hyperkinetic movement disorders. These can be developed immediately after taking the drug or start only after the chronic use of narcoleptics, where management is more challenging. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
