World Sleep 2022 | Is the Apnea Hypopnea Index reliable?

Emmanuel Mignot, MD, PhD, Stanford University Center for Sleep Sciences, Palo Alto, CA, discusses the Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI) to measure sleep apnea. Prof. Mignot describes there to be a groundswell of opposition in recent years, with many individuals in the scientific community believing the AHI to be unreliable. The AHI does not correlate well with symptoms and there is an element of overscoring – thus, the overdiagnosis of individuals for sleep apnea. There is a need to develop better ways to look at sleep apnea and predict future outcomes. This interview took place at the World Sleep Congress 2022 in Rome, Italy.
