AAN 2022 | Gender bias: advocating for women in neurology

Nina Schor, MD, PhD, FAAN, National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, Bethesda, MD, shares her thoughts on the progress towards achieving equity for women in neurology and future progress which she hopes to see. The position of women in science has advanced greatly since a few generations ago, however, disparities between men and women remain. There are clear differences in pay between men and women with the same position, as well as women having fewer publications in more prestigious journals. In addition to this, studies have shown that even when women reach high level positions they are often type-cast into certain roles such as education, fundraising, or public relations. Dr Schor goes on to explain that there does not need to be an equal number of men and women in every position, but women should have the same freedom to choose as men as to the path they wish to follow. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
