ECNP 2021 | The global burden of insomnia

Liborio Parrino, PhD, Università degli Studi di Parma, Parma, Italy, shares insights on the burden of insomnia, the most common sleep disorder worldwide. Despite great variability in lifestyle and cultural factors across the globe, insomnia affects individuals from all walks of life, and is growing in prevalence since the COVID-19 pandemic. Prof. Parrino emphasizes the importance of recognizing that the impacts of insomnia are not restricted to night time, but can cause major disruptions to daily life. Insomnia is associated with reduced attention, excessive daytime sleepiness, headache, and increased risk of psychiatric comorbidities, dementia, hypertension, and type 2 diabetes. Prof. Parrino discusses the need for sleep assessment to be widely implemented across neurology. This interview took place at the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology congress 2021.
