CONy 2023 | Management of chronic migraine complicated by medication overuse

Licia Grazzi, MD, Fondazione IRRCS Istituto Neurologico Carlo Besta, Milan, Italy, describes the clinical implications of treating patients with chronic migraine complicated by medication overuse. Withdrawal of the overused medication is the first step in the treatment process, as it often leads to improvement of the headache, followed by migraine prophylaxis. The availability of new monoclonal antibodies is changing clinical practice. Results from randomized clinical trials and real-world studies have shown that patients with medication overuse headache can start treatment with the monoclonal antibodies without withdrawal, and chronic migraine can be resolved and reverted to episodic migraine. This interview took place at the 17th World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) in Dubrovnik, Croatia.
