AAN 2023 | Microburst VNS: individualized epilepsy treatment

Cornelia Drees, MD, Mayo Clinic, Phoenix, AZ, explains the rationale behind using microburst vagus nerve stimulation (µVNS) as a potential treatment for drug-resistance epilepsy and compares it to standard VNS therapy.
Standard VNS is transmitted at a frequency of 1-30Hz, whereas µVNS consists of small bursts of high-frequency 100-350Hz stimulations with inter-burst silent periods. µVNS settings are personalized to each patient through fMRI to identify the setting with the largest effect on thalamus activation. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology Annual Meeting 2023 in Boston, MA.
