AD/PD 2021 | Doxycycline inhibits alpha-synuclein aggregation in PD models

Doxycycline is a wide-spectrum tetracyclic antibiotic clinically effective in the treatment of a variety of bacterial infections. Tiago Outeiro, PhD, University Medical Center Göttingen, Göttingen, Germany, discusses a study investigating the neuroprotective effects of doxycycline in Parkinson’s disease (PD) models. The effects of doxycycline on alpha-synuclein aggregation were studied in vivo, in vitro, and in a cell free system. Results showed that doxycycline decreases the number and size of alpha-synuclein aggregates in cells and induces a cellular redistribution of aggregates in a C.elegans model of PD. This interview took place during the AD/PD™ 2021 conference.
