EAN 2021 | Falls predict acute hospitalization in Parkinson’s disease

Diego Santos-García, MD, PhD, Coruña University Hospital, Coruña, Spain, discusses a study analyzing the frequency, causes, and predictors of acute hospitalization in Parkinson’s disease patients. The study included patients from the COPPADIS cohort, a multicenter study in Spain. Thirty-five out of 605 patients were reported to have an acute hospitalization during the 1-year follow-up after the baseline visit. Traumatic falls represented the most frequent cause of admission. In addition, the risk of hospitalization was higher if patients had additional complications. Future studies are needed to identify and clarify predictors of Parkinson’s disease patient hospitalization. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
