Davide Martino, MD, PhD, Hotchkiss Brain Institute, University of Calgary, Calgary, Alberta, Canada, discusses the differences between the clinical and demographic characteristics of patients with rapid onset functional tic-like behaviours and patients with developmental tic-like disorders, such as Tourette’s syndrome. Rapid onset tic-like behaviours often present later in life than developmental tic-like disorders, usually in teenagers or young adults. Additionally, the gender ratio is inverted. There is a significantly higher proportion of female patients than male patients with rapid onset tic-like disorders, while there is a significantly higher proportion of male patients than female patients with developmental tic-like disorders.
