Victor Rivera, MD, FAAN, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX, talks on health disparities, inequities, and social determinants of health in multiple sclerosis (MS) and related disorders in the United States (US). Limitations in access to care, including diagnosis and therapy, affect certain populations such as Hispanic and Latinx individuals. Those limitations create a time gap between the onset of disease and diagnosis. Prof. Rivera explains that part of the reason can be cultural, as studies have shown that Latin Americans in the US don’t seek neurological attention early on. Potential alleviation factors include increased education about MS among the general population and promoting therapy adherence to MS patients. This interview took place at the ACTRIMS Forum 2022 in West Palm Beach, Florida.
