ECTRIMS 2022 | Comparison of unwrapped phase and QSM for paramagnetic rim lesion detection in MS

Cristina Granziera, MD, PhD, University Hospital of Basel, Basel, Switzerland, describes a study that compared the visualization of paramagnetic rim lesions in unwrapped phase and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) in patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Paramagnetic rim lesions can be identified on susceptibility-based MRI. Although both unwrapped phase and QSM enable their identification, their relative sensitivity is unknown. Because other effects can influence the phase effects, it was hypothesized that QSM should provide better results. However, the study found no difference in paramagnetic rim lesions count obtained with phase and QSM, meaning that both techniques can be used. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2022 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
