CONy 2022 | Evaluating the reduction in stroke admissions during COVID-19

Ashfaq Shuaib, MD, FRCPC, FAHA, University of Alberta Stroke Program, Alberta, Canada, presents findings from a meta-analysis of the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on rates of stroke presentations and on rates of reperfusion therapy. Initial research following stroke admissions in a Qatari hospital found that the number of patients with strokes decreased during the peak of the pandemic and a worldwide analysis attempted to elucidate the possible causes. A reduction in pollution, people staying at home more, and an increased fear of going to hospitals may have contributed to a fewer number of patients admitted for strokes. This interview was conducted during the 2022 World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) meeting.
