EAN 2021 | Impact of the ketogenic diet on inflammation-associated microRNAs in epilepsy

Bárbara Guerra Leal, PhD, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, and her team are studying epigenetic markers in refractory epilepsy. A ketogenic diet is often used for management of epilepsy with seizures not controlled with anti-epileptic drugs. Results have identified a high efficacy in children, however, efficacy in adults is less clear at this stage. The research aims to understand how the ketogenic diet impacts inflammatory microRNAs, which are biomarkers associated with epilepsy. Initial research has identified an upregulation of the inflammatory markers miR-146a and miR-155 as a response to the therapy and further work is being done to establish the importance of this. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
