IEC 2021 | Exciting developments in the field of epilepsy

Emilio Russo, MD, PhD, Università Magna Graecia di Catanzaro, Catanzaro, Italy, discusses the future of research in the field of epilepsy, including the gut-brain axis and gene therapy. Currently, we are not at the stage where we can immediately prescribe a treatment to a patient regarding their gut-brain axis. Moving forward, further research is needed to confidently improve the quality of our treatments utilizing the information available on the gut-brain axis. There are already many drugs on the market, and things have been changing over the past 15-20 years, with new drug targets being discovered frequently. Hence, the future is very promising in this field. This interview took place during the International Epilepsy Congress 2021.
