Dileep Yavagal, MD, University of Miami’s Miller School of Medicine, Miami, FL, talks about global access and utilization of acute ischemic stroke interventions. Access to thrombectomy for stroke is a significant unmet need in the field. Since it has become a standard of care in 2015, thrombectomy has shown a major benefit in reversing the disability that large vessel occlusion causes. However, access to thrombectomy remains limited, as shown in the survey from the Global Thrombectomy Campaign, where the median access rate globally was just 2.76%. Therefore, strategies to improve its access around the globe are of utter importance. Mission Thrombectomy 2020+ (MT2020+) is a global health campaign to accelerate global access to stroke thrombectomy surgery. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
