AAN 2021 | The effect of health disparities on neurological manifestations of COVID-19

Nizar Souayah, MD, FAAN, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, Newark, NJ, discusses the neurological manifestations of COVID-19 and how health disparities impact these complications. An increasing body of evidence has mounted over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic to suggest that there are health disparities in COVID-19, including in regard to neurological manifestations. Dr Souayah highlights research showing that racial minorities are more impacted by neurological complications than Caucasians, particularly African Americans, and shares potential genetic explanations for these findings. Dr Souayah also talks on the findings of analyses conducted using the Cerner COVID-19 patient database. This interview took place during the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2021 Annual Meeting.
