World Sleep 2022 | The odds ratio product as an objective index for OSA

Danny Eckert, PhD, Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health, Flinders University, Adelaide, Australia, introduces the odds ratio product (ORP) as an alternative metric to the gold-standard apnea-hypoxia index (AHI) in measuring obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) severity. ORP is an objective measure of sleep depth using the relationships of the powers of different electroencephalogram (EEG) frequencies in a single index. When used to analyze clinical data from two large cohort studies, HypnoLaus in Switzerland and Prof. Eckert’s study carried out at the Adelaide Institute for Sleep Health, the ORP was better able to predict physiological symptoms such as sleepiness and perception of sleep quality. This interview was recorded at the World Sleep Congress 2022 in Rome, Italy.
