AAN 2021 | The benefits of epilepsy surgery

Lara Jehi, MD, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland, OH, discusses the benefits and potential of epilepsy surgery. Epilepsy is a disease that impairs individuals to be fully functional in society. More importantly, patients are at high risk of sudden death if they have uncontrolled seizures. Dr Jehi highlights how surgery is an underutilized treatment that could change patients’ life. The surgery has the potential to stop seizures completely for at least 10 to 15 years in up to 70 to 80% of the patients, it can extend patients’ life by 5 to 7 years, and it can also reverse development delay in children. This interview took place during the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) 2021 Annual Meeting.
