ECTRIMS 2022 | Barriers to the use of internet-based technology by people with MS

Yael Goverover, OTR/L, PhD, New York University, New York, NY, explains the barriers multiple sclerosis (MS) patients face to using internet-based technology in daily life. People with MS described that the speed of technological advances makes it challenging to keep up with the modalities available and that cognitive and motor skills also impact their ability to use internet-based technologies. Studies have confirmed that fine motor skills predict the everyday use of technology by people with MS. Therefore, occupational therapists and rehabilitation professionals should implement strategies to help people with MS and fine motor skills issues access these technologies; these strategies can include having larger screens and buttons with large target size, as well as providing training calls to patients. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2022 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
