EAN 2021 | SCAN-AED: prenatal anti-seizure medication exposure and developmental outcomes

Marte-Helene Bjork, MD, PhD, Haukeland University Hospital, Bergen, Norway, discusses the SCAN-AED study, investigating the association between prenatal exposure to anti-seizure medications and developmental outcomes such as autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) and intellectual disabilities. The study found a strong association between ASDs/intellectual disabilities in children and the use of valproic acid or topiramate by pregnant women. No association was found with the use of lamotrigine or levetiracetam. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
