ECTRIMS 2022 | Protective and pro-inflammatory lipid mediators in MS

Gijs Kooij, PhD, Amsterdam UMC, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, Amsterdam, Netherlands, talks about changes in the profile of protective and pro-inflammatory lipid mediators in multiple sclerosis (MS). An increased level of pro-inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and decreased levels of protective mediators such as lipoxin A4 are observed in patients with MS. Ongoing studies are trying to link the variations observed in the lipid profiles with clinical paraments to predict the severity of the disease. Therefore, it is essential to know in detail about the machinery of cells, the mechanism by which lipids are produced in the cells, and why these lipid profiles vary in MS patients. This will provide a deeper understanding of the regulation of lipid mediators to alleviate the progression of MS. This interview took place at the European Committee for Treatment and Research in Multiple Sclerosis (ECTRIMS) Congress 2022 in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
