AAN 2022 | Neurological care of adults with intellectual developmental disabilities

Seth M. Keller, MD, American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD), discusses unmet needs in neurological care of adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs). The patient population of adults with IDDs includes, for instance, people that have Down syndrome, autism, and cerebral palsy. This population has very challenging health complications, including neurological complications such as epilepsy, movement disorders, and spasticity. One of the most pressing unmet needs is the lack of education and training for adult neurologists. Because most of the training provided for IDDs is in the pediatric setting, when young individuals with IDDs become adults and transition into adult neurology care, they are frequently faced with difficulties, as adult neurologists are usually not fully trained on how to care for them appropriately. This interview took place at the American Academy of Neurology 2022 Congress in Seattle, WA.
