VJVirtual | Deinstitutionalization of people with IDD in Ukraine: action plans

Seth Keller • 1 Aug 2022

Seth Keller, MD, American Academy of Developmental Medicine and Dentistry (AADMD), discusses the local and international action plans to address the ongoing issues witnessed in the institutions caring for people with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) in Ukraine. The action plan has different levels: social, health, and political. The international community, particularly those oriented toward children, actively provides support. However, adequate support that can lead to significant reform and improve community care and family support is needed. From a medical standpoint, it is important that neurologists, together with national and international organizations, can find ways to support care providers in Ukraine to help fight and promote the human rights of those with IDD and to end institutionalization. This interview was recorded during an online conference call with The Video Journal of Neurology (VJNeurology).
