Hitoshi Shimada, MD, PhD, National Institute of Radiological Sciences, Chiba, Japan, discusses future directions for developments in neuroimaging for Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related disorders. Neuroinflammation is a promising marker under investigation in neurodegenerative diseases. Longitudinal neuroimaging studies in Alzheimer’s disease have been tracking neuroinflammation in addition to amyloid and tau pathology. Dr Shimada suggests that similar approaches in PD could be beneficial as evidence supports the presence of neuroinflammation even before the onset of clinical symptoms in certain familial Parkinsonisms. This interview took place during the 2021 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders.
