MDS 2022 | Efforts to increase training in movement disorders

Francisco Cardoso, MD, PhD, FAAN, The Federal University of Minas Gerais, Belo Horizonte, Brazil, and President of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society (MDS), addresses the lack of access to trained healthcare professionals in movement disorders, particularly in low and middle-income countries. To tackle this issue, the MDS provides financial resources to support the training of healthcare professionals. Prof. Cardoso highlights that the lack of access to trained healthcare professionals is not limited to low and middle-income countries; for instance, in the US, more than half of the patients with Parkinson’s disease do not see a neurologist. Therefore, MDS is collaborating with other organizations to increase training in movement disorders worldwide. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
