MDS 2022 | Research advancements in the pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease

Serge Przedborski, MD, PhD, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY, summarizes the research priorities in unraveling pathogenic mechanisms behind Parkinson’s disease (PD). It is clear now that research into the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases needs to consider multiple aspects, including multicellular levels and temporality. Because neurodegeneration is a progressive process, the types of molecular cascades involved may vary depending on the disease stage. Therefore, a temporal and multicellular approach might be needed to improve our understanding of the disease pathogenesis and develop novel therapies. Currently, research focuses on two aspects: understanding why protein deposits are formed and how to prevent them and the development of technologies with temporal and cellular resolutions to obtain deep insight into the pathogenesis of PD. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
