Christian Gerloff, MD, University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf, Hamburg, Germany, shares his thoughts on the importance of developing neurostimulation as a treatment modality for patients after stroke. Prof. Gerloff highlights the prevalence of upper extremity dysfunction after stroke and the hindrance it represents to getting back into activities of daily life. Given the failure of studies investigation pharmacological interventions for upper extremity motor recovery, neurostimulation is an important avenue for continued exploration.
