EAN 2021 | Seizures are not everything: considering outcomes beyond seizures in epilepsy care

Eugen Trinka, MD, Paracelsus Medical University Salzburg, Salzburg, Austria, discusses the importance of considering outcomes beyond seizures in epilepsy in order to optimize patient care and quality of life. Improving seizure count is the major goal of epilepsy treatment, but many other factors need considering. Patients with epilepsy have a higher risk of death as compared to the general population, which can be attributed not only to seizures but also somatic comorbidities and the underlying cause of their epilepsy. Therefore, it is important to treat seizures, causes, and co-morbidities in epilepsy. Secondary outcomes are becoming more and more important in drug development. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
