CONy 2022 | Strategies to reduce cases of epilepsy

Ley Sander, MD, PhD, FRCP, FEAN, UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology, London, UK, describes approaches to prevent epilepsy. It is estimated that approximately a third of epilepsy cases can be prevented in the tropics with proper sanitation, including separating human waste from bodies of water. Neurocysticercosis is a parasitic infection that can result in seizures and is associated with improper hygiene. Improving cerebrovascular care is an additional strategy under consideration to reduce cases of epilepsy, especially in older populations. This interview was conducted during the 2022 World Congress on Controversies in Neurology (CONy) meeting.
