ARUK 2022 | In vivo interactions between Nedd4 ubiquitin ligases and α-synuclein in Parkinson’s disease models

James Conway, PhD Student, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK, explains current research into the role of Nedd4-1 and Nedd4-2, E3 ubiquitin protein ligases, in the mouse dopaminergic midbrain and their crosstalk with alpha-synuclein. Previous research has revealed links between Nedd4-1 and alpha-synuclein in vitro. Two Nedd4-1/Nedd4-2 dopaminergic-specific knockout mouse models were used to study the in vitro interactions, the results of which suggested that Nedd4-2 has a greater role to in the maintenance of the dopaminergic system than Nedd4-1. Further research is needed to investigate the mechanisms of interaction between Nedd4-1 and Nedd4-2 and alpha-synuclein. This interview took place at the Alzheimer’s Research UK Conference 2022 in Brighton, UK.
