Movement disorders can be classified into two types of movement: hyperkinetic and hypokinetic movement. Sanjay Pandey, MD, Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital, New Delhi, India, discusses the classification of hyperkinetic movement disorders and shares an overview of the different management strategies available for patients. Hyperkinetic movement disorders are usually broken down into two types of behavior: rhythmical (non-jerky) and irregular (jerky). Tics, chorea, and myoclonus are types of irregular hyperkinetic movements, while tremor and dystonia are usually rhythmic. Understanding the etiology of hyperkinetic movement disorders and ruling out causes such as infections, autoimmune diseases, or drug-induced movement disorders is essential since treatment will differ entirely. Looking into clinical phenomenology is also important when classifying and treating hyperkinetic movement disorders. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
