MDS 2022 | Investigations into managing non-motor fluctuations

Non-motor fluctuations are associated with dopaminergic fluctuations as well as serotonergic fluctuations. K. Ray-Chaudhuri, MD, DSc, FRCP, FEAN, Parkinson’s Foundation Centre of Excellence, King’s College Hospital, & King’s College London, London, UK, comments on dopaminergic therapy to treat non-motor fluctuations in Parkinson’s disease. Levodopa has been found to effectively manage depression and anxiety induced by non-motor fluctuations and the addition of COMT inhibitors such as opicapone can prolong the activity of levodopa at night, which is supported by data from the BIPARK-I study (NCT01568073). Addition of tolcapone has also shown to improve fatigue and pain in patients. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
