EEC 2022 | Managing epilepsy in patients with intellectual disabilities

Christian Brandt, MD, Bielefeld University, Medical School, Bielefeld, Germany, comments on important considerations when managing adult patients with epilepsy and intellectual disabilities. The general approach to diagnosis and seizure treatment is the same as in the general epilepsy population. However, taking into account patient’s difficulties with communication and understanding is essential. A careful approach and sensitive manner is necessary to optimize outcomes. Adjustments may also be needed regarding pharmacological therapy, as patients may not be able to communicate the adverse events they are experiencing, necessitating close monitoring. This interview took place at the 14th European Epilepsy Congress (EEC) 2022 in Geneva, Switzerland.
