Lianrui Zuo, MSE, The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD, discusses different approaches to improving image standardization in the context of multiple sclerosis (MS). Mr. Zuo is developing artificial intelligence tools, such as image harmonization, whose output is an image. Other researchers are developing statistical harmonization methods, which extract volumetric measurements and fit them into a statistical model to mitigate the effects of different imaging sites. Both techniques aim to solve the same problem – standardizing analysis and enabling more statistical power in MS research. This interview took place at the Consortium of Multiple Sclerosis Centers (CMSC) Congress 2023 in Aurora, CO.
