ESOC 2022 | Biomarkers driving precision medicine in stroke

Recent decades have seen a global shift towards precision medicine in healthcare and the story is no different in stroke. Stroke severity, outcomes, and recovery trajectories are highly variable and thus, moving towards personalized management is an important next step. Advancements in therapeutic options and scientific understanding are helping to achieve this goal. Ana Catarina Fonseca, MD, PhD, University of Lisbon, Lisbon, Portugal, discusses the importance of biomarkers for personalized medicine in stroke. For example, data was presented at the European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022 showing that higher levels of N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) were associated with a higher probability of a poor outcome after thrombectomy. Biomarkers like NT-proBNP may aid outcome prediction, as well as improve our understanding of the pathophysiological mechanisms involved and identify new targets for therapeutic intervention. This interview took place at European Stroke Organisation Conference 2022 in Lyon, France.
