EAN 2022 | Diagnostic challenges in adult epilepsy patients with NDDs

Christian Brandt, MD, Bielefeld University, Medical School, Bielefeld, Germany, comments on the challenges in diagnosing adult epilepsy patients with neurodevelopmental disabilities (NDDs). Obtaining epilepsy histories in adults with NDDs can be challenging as patients may not be able to communicate. They may also be unable to cooperate during EEG recording or MRI scanning. An additional challenge in this patient population is the existence of several specific genetic syndromes. Modern molecular genetic testing allows the identification of the etiology of epilepsy, offering the opportunity for precision medicine approaches. This interview took place at the European Academy of Neurology (EAN) 2022 Congress in Vienna, Austria.
