Robert Cowan, MD, FAAN, Stanford University School of Medicine, Stanford, CA, outlines exciting developments in the headache space. Over the last decade, tremendous advances in migraine research and breakthroughs in therapy have taken place. Novel therapeutic strategies are based on blocking the calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) receptor, which has a pivotal role in migraine attacks and include gepants and monoclonal antibodies. Medicines for both acute and preventive treatment is another interesting trend in the migraine field. Additionally, Prof. Cowan discusses t medication-overuse headaches.
