VJVirtual | Guillain-Barré syndrome and COVID-19 in Italy

Sabrina Ravaglia • 29 Apr 2020

Sabrina Ravaglia, MD, PhD, IRCCS C. Mondino Foundation, Pavia, Italy, discusses the association of Guillain-Barré syndrome with COVID-19 in Italy. Five patients across three northern Italian hospitals were examined. Neurological symptoms manifested 5-10 days after the initial COVID-19 symptoms. Additionally, severe axonal impairment was detected during medical induction studies and the patients had a poor response to immunoglobulin treatment. The patients had a poor prognosis and experienced respiratory failure due to respiratory muscle weakness. This interview was recorded during an online conference call with The Video Journal of Neurology (VJNeurology).
