EAN 2021 | Impact of sex and gender on migraine clinical presentation

Elena Lebedeva, MD, PhD, DocMedSci, Urals State Medical University, Yekaterinburg, Russia, explains that migraine is the leading cause of disability in women, second only to gynecological disorders, occurring more than twofold more frequently in women than in men, 18% vs. 6%, respectively, with the highest frequency in women under 50 years of age. Moreover, women afflicted by specific types of migraines, e.g., menstrual and pregnancy-related migraines, are more likely to develop chronic migraines and possess more pronounced associated factors that may lead to migraine chronification. This interview took place during the European Academy of Neurology 2021 congress.
