MDS 2022 | Measuring medication adherence in Parkinson’s disease: PD-MAS

Medication adherence is an essential component in the management of chronic diseases requiring long-term pharmacotherapy. Michelle Tosin, PhD, MSN, RN, Rush University Medical Center, Chicago, IL, highlights the importance of medication adherence in Parkinson’s disease (PD) and discusses the development of rating scales to measure it. Poor medication adherence is common among patients with PD and has been associated with increased morbidity, mortality, and treatment cost. Accurate measurement of adherence behaviors is vital to understand therapeutic response and effectiveness and provide valid and reliable clinical and research results. The Parkinson’s Disease Medication Adherence Scale (PD-MAS) is a patient-reported outcome instrument developed to reliably and validly capture the set of dimensions and factors involved in the medication adherence process. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
