ISC 2023 | The evolution of mechanical thrombectomy approaches

Since its widespread adoption in the 1990s, the field of endovascular recanalization therapy has evolved dramatically. Adnan Qureshi, MD, University of Missouri-Columbia, Columbia, MO, comments on the development of advanced, specialized devices for mechanical thrombectomy and ongoing efforts to continue to improve outcomes. Initially, stent retrieval catheters were more widely used for mechanical thrombectomy (MT), as these devices were used in the pivotal trials that proved the value of MT for large vessel occlusion stroke. Since, aspiration devices have also been developed, with the latest devices showing equivalent results to stent retriever-based thrombectomy. Dr Qureshi notes how these approaches are used in clinical practice and how the field is likely to change in the future. This interview took place during the International Stroke Conference (ISC) 2023 in Dallas, TX.
