MDS 2022 | Advancements in cell therapies for Parkinson’s disease

Serge Przedborski, MD, PhD, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, New York, NY, describes current developments in advanced therapies for Parkinson’s disease (PD). Cell therapies targeting PD usually aim to directly treat the illness or alleviate symptoms. Whilst the complex nature of neural pathways makes cell therapies difficult to directly target PD, there have been some promising results in targeting symptoms. Affected neurons are surrounded by other cells undergoing neurodegeneration and the use of cell therapy may reduce neuron dysfunction. However, further questions remain as to whether cell therapies are as efficacious as non-invasive therapies. This interview took place at the 2022 International Congress of Parkinson’s Disease and Movement Disorders in Madrid, Spain.
