WSC 2022 | The importance of diabetes control in stroke prevention

Patients with diabetes are twice as likely to have a stroke than those without diabetes. This is in part because diabetes can cause vascular changes in the brain, such as atherosclerosis and cerebral small vessel disease. Nijasri Suwanwela, MD, Chulalongkorn Comprehensive Stroke Center, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Bangkok, Thailand, expresses the importance of diabetes control in stroke prevention. New antidiabetic drugs such as GLP-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs) provide promising benefits for both primary and secondary stroke prevention. This interview took place at the World Stroke Congress 2022 in Singapore.
